Justin Timberlake tearfully asks for forgiveness after pleading guilty

Justin Timberlake advises: “Don’t drink when you drive.”

The star, who initially claimed he had only had “a martini” after being stopped in June, admitted in court on Friday that he had was drunk and impaired when authorities arrested him for driving in Sag Harbor, according to TMZ. He pleaded guilty to driving under the influence.

He is said to have told police officers at the time: “I was drinking a martini and following my friends home,” as described in the indictment against him. The indictment also points out that he was unsteady on his feet and could not concentrate on the conversation with police officers while he was looking for his car registration.

Shortly after his hearing on Friday, Timberlake told the press: “I try to set very high standards for myself and that was not the case.” He then appeared to hold back tears as he said: “I was in a situation where I could have made a different decision.” He added: “Even if you only had one drink, you don’t get behind the wheel of a car.”

As part of his punishment, Timberlake will pay a maximum fine of $500, perform 25 to 40 hours of community service, and make a public service announcement likely intended to raise awareness about drunk driving. His New York City driver’s license will be suspended, as will face legal consequences for refusing a breathalyzer test, as he did after the arrest.
