Kadokawa – the Japan-based media publisher behind successful franchises such as Sword Art Online And Re:Zero: Starting a life in another world — is currently riding the success of several up-and-coming franchises. The company recently announced its top-grossing IPs for the first quarter of 2024 (April-June) and revealed a number of surprising titles that are making waves in the anime market this year.
According to GameBiz, Tasty in the Dungeon (also known as Dungeon Meshi) is by far Kadokawa’s highest-grossing intellectual property of the year, with total revenue of over two billion yen in “publishing, anime and rights revenue”. In second place is KonoSuba: God’s blessing for this wonderful worldwhich has generated almost one billion yen in media revenue. Of particular note is Doga Kobo’s anime-only IP, Oshi no Komanaged to grab the third spot despite only generating revenue from one medium. Isekai and fantasy will continue to dominate the anime and manga industry in 2024
While the above titles vary greatly in tone and content, some can be classified (at least in part) as isekai or fantasy. As key industry figures have noted in the past, audiences – especially in Japan – prefer genres such as isekai for both entertainment and escapism. However, fantasy stories that do not fall into the isekai genre also seem to resonate with audiences. Delicious indungeonbased on Ryoko Kui’s manga series of the same name, tells the story of a swordsman named Laios Touden and his party as they venture through a dangerous dungeon to save Laios’ sister Falin from an evil dragon. As they progress through each floor, Laios, his elven wizard Marcille, and their dwarf companion Senshi learn how to prepare nourishing meals from ingredients they harvest themselves, resulting in some truly delicious concoctions. KonoSuba: God’s blessing for this wonderful world began as a light novel series by writer-illustrator team Natsume Akatsuki and Kurone Mishima. Crunchyroll, which streams JC Staff’s groundbreaking series adaptation, summarizes the story as follows: “After a traffic accident, Kazuma Sato’s disappointingly short life should really be over, but he wakes up to see a beautiful girl in front of him. Claiming to be a goddess named Aqua, she asks him if he wants to go to another world and take just one thing with him, and they are transported to a fantasy world full of adventure ruled by a demon king. Kazuma just wants to live in peace, but Aqua wants to solve many of the world’s problems, and the demon king won’t turn a blind eye for long…” Earlier this year KonoSuba Season 3 also ranked seventh on Animate Times’ “Top 10 Anime Recommendations for Spring 2024,” a list compiled by the publication’s readers.

While the Oshi no Ko Anime is not categorized as isekai, but it borrows the genre’s reincarnation motif. The story begins with rural gynecologist Gorou Amamiya, who loves pop idols – particularly rising star Ai Hoshino. One day, the pregnant Ai visits Gorou’s clinic. But instead of giving birth to her baby, an unfortunate tragedy leads to Gorou losing his life and being reincarnated as Ai’s son Aquamarine. Season 2, which premiered last month, follows Aquamarine as he infiltrates the Japanese media world as a young stage actor. Despite its unusual premise Oshi no Ko has received widespread praise from anime fans for exposing the toxic elements of the Japanese pop idol scene.

Tasty in the Dungeon is currently available exclusively on Netflix. Oshi no Ko Season 2 can be streamed on HIDIVE, while Season 1 can be watched on Disney+ and Hulu.
