Future Vice President Kamala Harris made an embarrassing cameo in an ABC News segment from nearly thirty years ago that went viral Tuesday, in which the then-California district attorney is asked if she was the daughter of future San Francisco mayor Willie Brown — at the time the two were dating.
“Excuse me, are you his daughter?” an unidentified woman asks Harris, standing next to a distracted Brown, in the clip from a 1995 “PrimeTime Live” video package that emerged hours before the Democratic presidential nominee’s debate against former President Donald Trump.
After a second of stunned silence, Harris replied, “No, I’m not.”
Harris, now 59, had a romantic relationship with Brown, now 90, in the mid-1990s, when she was a young prosecutor in the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office and he was married and speaker of the California State Assembly.
Their relationship reportedly began in 1994 and ended sometime in 1995, the year Brown was elected mayor of San Francisco.
The video package – a portrait of Brown – switches to Harris and her then-lover, as reporter Judd Rose notes that the influential Democrat was “notorious” for his “extravagant lifestyle,” which included a penchant for “delicate women.”
Harris also appears earlier in this section, cheering as she stands by Brown’s side during his mayoral victory speech.
Brown, who appointed Harris to the California Unemployment Insurance Appeals Board and the state Medical Assistance Commission in 1994, is credited with boosting her career during their relationship.
“Yes, I may have influenced their careers by appointing them to two state commissions when I was Speaker of the Assembly,” Brown acknowledged in a 2019 letter to the San Francisco Chronicle, noting that he also promoted the careers of several other prominent politicians with whom he was not a member.
Brown also supported Harris in her successful run for San Francisco District Attorney in 2003, which investigative journalist Peter Schweizer said served “corrupt” purposes.
“Kamala Harris has a long history of being a corrupt prosecutor,” Schweizer, who is also president of the watchdog group Government Accountability Institute, wrote on X in July.
“I don’t use that word lightly,” he added. “Mayor Willie Brown helped get her elected district attorney of San Francisco because the current district attorney, Terence Hallinan, was filing lawsuits against his friends and donors.”
“When Harris defeated Hallinan, she dropped those charges or pleaded for a reduced sentence,” Schweizer claimed.
Trump, 78, claimed during a press conference last month that he “knows Willie Brown very well” and accused his opponent’s ex-boyfriend of “playing a big part in what happened to Kamala.”
