Kansas City Chiefs outlast Atlanta Falcons and are 3-0

ATLANTA – The Kansas City Chiefs are one of four NFL teams with a 3-0 record, but that was hard to see in the locker room after their 22-17 win over the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday night.

Patrick Mahomes, in particular, sounded a bit like a player whose team lost.

“I feel like I haven’t played very well, and it has nothing to do with stats,” said Mahomes, who threw two touchdown passes but also had an interception in the end zone. “I just feel like I’m missing opportunities whenever they’re out there and not throwing the ball exactly where I want it. I’m not playing my best football and we’re still getting wins, so I’ve got to get better to improve the offense.”

The Chiefs protected their lead in the fourth quarter with two defensive stops inside Kansas City’s 15-yard line. Both times, the Falcons lost the ball on a punting attempt.

Coach Andy Reid had a slightly more optimistic assessment, but one of his postgame talking points focused on the fact that the offense had put the Chiefs in danger by running three plays and then ceasing on their only drive between the two defensive stops.

After the Falcons scored a touchdown on the opening drive, the Chiefs went on a methodical, time-consuming 17-play drive that should have ended in a touchdown of their own, but instead came up empty-handed when Mahomes threw the interception in the end zone to safety Justin Simmons, a former Denver Bronco who has six career picks on Mahomes.

No other player has more than two against him.

“Those are the mistakes you can’t make in the red zone, and it seems like I make it every time I play against Simmons,” Mahomes said.

The Chiefs have made a point of making more big plays on offense this season, but aside from a 27-yard toss to Rashee Rice in the third quarter, their longest play was 17 yards.

Mahomes threw 39 passes, but only managed 217 yards.

“It’s about me getting back to my fundamentals, getting our guys in the right position and then we have to perform at a higher level offensively,” Mahomes said. “If teams want to make us dominate the field, we have to prove we can do that and I’m sure we’ll get a lot of that next week (against the) Chargers.”
