Katahdin Trust Company Announces Donation to Tekαkαpimək Contact Station in Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument

PATTEN, Maine – Katahdin Trust Company, a community bank based in northern Maine, is pleased to announce a significant contribution to the Tekαkαpimək Contact Station, a new facility in Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument. This new facility will significantly support the growing recreation economy in the Katahdin region.

The construction of Tekαkαpimək has generated $28 million in revenue for the local economy and created jobs and opportunities for regional contractors, businesses, artisans, tribal members and workers throughout Maine.

Located on 23 acres of land on Lookout Mountain, the 80,000-square-foot building serves as a gateway for visitors from around the world to explore the area’s natural and cultural wonders. The contact station’s exhibits and waysides provide insight into the monument and encourage visitors to explore its diverse landscapes, including trails, rivers and night skies.

“We are honored to support this significant project that not only highlights the natural beauty of Katahdin’s forests and waters, but also preserves and celebrates the rich cultural heritage of the Wabanaki people,” said Jon Prescott, President and CEO of Katahdin Trust Company. “We are committed to ensuring these stories and landscapes continue to be enjoyed for future generations.”

Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument covers 87,563 acres in northern Maine and offers breathtaking views of Katahdin and the East Branch of the Penobscot River. The bank opened its first branch in the nearby community of Patten in 1918 and is proudly named after Katahdin, the highest mountain in Maine.

Tekαkαpimək prioritizes accessibility with handicapped parking and pedestrian walkways. It also features cutting-edge green technology, including off-grid solar and thermal energy, local materials, and passive heating and cooling strategies, underscoring the project’s commitment to sustainability.

Tekαkαpimək is funded by a capital campaign of the Friends of Katahdin Woods & Waters, gifted to the American people, and managed by the National Park Service.
