Kate Middleton and Prince William appeared more in love than ever in an emotional new video announcing that the Princess of Wales has completed her chemotherapy treatment.

On Monday, September 9, the royal mother shared the news in a three-minute video that gave viewers plenty to think about – including a personal update on Kate’s health. “My focus now is to do everything I can to stay cancer-free,” she said.

Between Kate’s voiceover, there were shots of her with her husband Prince William, to whom she has been married for 13 years, and their three children Prince George (11), Princess Charlotte (9) and Prince Louis (6). The clip – filmed in August by Will Warr in Norfolk, where the Welsh family lives in their country home Anmer Hall – gives viewers an unprecedented look behind the scenes of their family life.

The royal couple, who have been together for more than 20 years, are seen holding hands, lying next to each other and sitting on a picnic blanket with the family dog Orla. At one point in the clip, Kate rests her head on William’s shoulder; in another loving moment, William kisses his wife on the cheek.

“Above all, this time has reminded William and me to reflect on and be grateful for the simple but important things in life that so many of us often take for granted,” Kate said. “Simply to love and be loved.”

Kate and William’s love story began in the early 2000s when they were students at the University of St Andrews. In 2010, the pair announced their engagement ahead of their wedding on April 29, 2011 at Westminster Abbey; earlier this year they celebrated their 13th wedding anniversary, just over a month after Kate released a much more serious video on March 22 announcing her cancer diagnosis.

“The last nine months have been incredibly tough for us as a family,” Kate, 42, said in the video posted on September 9. “Life as you know it can change in an instant and we’ve had to find a way to navigate the stormy waters and the unknown path.”

She added: “The journey through cancer is complex, scary and unpredictable for anyone, especially those closest to you,” she said, no doubt referring to William, also 42, and their children. “With humility, you also confront your own vulnerabilities in ways you’ve never considered before and it gives you a new perspective on everything.”

Kate and William’s public displays of affection in the new video were a stark contrast from years past, when the Prince and Princess of Wales were typically more stoic in public. In the past, the two have been less demonstrative in public, although Myka Meier, royal etiquette expert and founder and director of Beaumont Etiquette, previously told PEOPLE, “There is no actual etiquette or royal protocol that says the couple must refrain from public displays of affection.” The likely reason for the couple’s reticence, she said, is that they are “working representatives of the British monarchy.”

Although the Sept. 9 announcement did not give a specific return to work date, Kate has been working from home over the summer and keeping in touch with her team. PEOPLE has learned that she will not be joining William on his visit to Wales this week, but that she plans to attend Remembrance Sunday with her husband on Nov. 10. Remembrance Sunday is an annual fixture in the royal calendar when royals, politicians and military leaders gather at the Cenotaph memorial in Whitehall, London, to pay their last respects to fallen soldiers.

“However, I am looking forward to getting back to work and, if possible, making some more public appearances in the coming months,” Kate said on September 9.

After undergoing abdominal surgery in January and announcing her cancer in March, Kate has only made two official public appearances in 2024 so far – at Trooping the Colour on June 15 and then next month at Wimbledon on July 14. After her appearance at Wimbledon alongside daughter Princess Charlotte and sister Pippa Middleton, royal biographer Robert Jobson, author of the new book Catherine, Princess of Wales, told PEOPLE: “She used to live her life by the calendar, and now she lives her life and the calendar comes after that.”

He added: “It will come back, but when you have experienced something like that, it changes your perspective and the order of things.”

A Buckingham Palace spokesman said King Charles (who is currently undergoing cancer treatment) and Queen Camilla “consider the details of today’s announcement to be wonderful news and will continue to send the Princess all their love, thoughts and support as she continues her journey to a full recovery.”
