Killing at Frankfurt train station linked to feud in Türkiye

Killing at Frankfurt train station linked to feud in Türkiye

A family feud in Turkey could be the reason for a shocking fatal shooting on a platform at Frankfurt’s busy main station, prosecutors said on Friday.

According to police, a suspected 54-year-old gunman shot a 27-year-old man from behind with a pistol at the train station on Tuesday evening around 9 p.m. and then shot the man twice in the head while he was lying on the ground.

The 27-year-old victim died at the scene. A few moments later, the German police managed to arrest the 54-year-old suspect on a neighboring platform as he tried to board another train and escape.

Both the alleged shooter and the victim are Turkish citizens, according to the public prosecutor’s office.

Turkish media had previously cited a family conflict as the background to the attack, but without providing any sources.

The fatal shooting in the middle of one of the country’s busiest train stations shocked many people in Germany and triggered extensive media coverage.

The spokesman for the Frankfurt public prosecutor’s office, Dominik Mies, explained that a surveillance video of the crime circulating on the Internet was genuine. It shows a man approaching a second man from behind, holding a gun to the back of his head and the man falling to the ground shortly afterwards.

According to the public prosecutor’s office, the suspect has so far refused to comment on the allegations against him.

Mies said the investigation was in full swing.

“We continue to evaluate evidence, interview witnesses and conduct all kinds of investigations. Every stone is being turned over, every angle is being examined and we will not rest until the crime is solved,” he said.
