Lady M’s largest and most luxurious mille crepe cake shop opens in Houston

Lady M’s largest and most luxurious mille crepe cake shop opens in Houston

Many Houstonians were excited when Lady M Confection, the New York-based boutique crepe confectionery with an international following, finally opened its first Texas location in Houston last year. Unlike some other locations, the busy Galleria location was best suited for takeout. But now, with the opening of the second Houston location—which is also the largest and most elegant location in the United States—diners can order their Mille Crepe from Lady M in Houston and eat it with a glass of champagne, too.

Located in the new West on West apartment complex at 12270 Westheimer Road, the shop opened on Wednesday, August 14. Each of the popular mille crepe cakes is made with lightly flavored pastry creams and 20 layers of paper-thin handmade crepes, which gave the cakes their name (“mille,” which means “thousand” in French). Founder Ken Romaniszyn tells Eater Houston that the new pastry shop features staple flavors like green tea, pistachio, and the intricately assembled “Checkered” flavor — consisting of chocolate and vanilla sponge cakes that are cubed and then reassembled in a checkerboard pattern. The pastry shop will also continue to offer its rotation of expected seasonal flavors, including a sweet and tart green tea guava, the two flavors of matcha chocolate, and a jasmine and calamansi cake.

Lady M's dining area features elegant booths and tables decorated with fresh flowers and chandeliers.

While guests can of course take their cakes to go at the Westchase location, Lady M’s pristine but minimalist decor and special touches are designed to make them want to stay. “In New York, we often want them to come and go for a short time,” says Romaniszyn, who founded the business in 2001. “But in Houston, we’ve created a different atmosphere. We want (guests) to come here, relax and spend some time here.”

Inside, Lady M’s dining room is decorated in signature pearl whites and neutrals. Crystal chandeliers hang overhead, spacious booths and tables are decorated with fresh bouquets. Romaniszyn, who has children of his own, says he also made sure to add welcoming elements for families, including stroller storage and a changing station in the bathrooms. But the elegant, gallery-like decor remains simple, allowing the cakes to remain the star of the show.

Houston’s Westchase location will also be the first to have a beer and wine license, which will allow the restaurant to soon serve wine and champagne. Other new offerings include eight flavors of ice cream from Brooklyn-founded ice cream company Van Leeuwen, along with the standard selection of coffee drinks made from French Coperaco Cafe coffee and teas served by the cup or pot to accompany the cakes. Those looking for another to-go option that can handle the Houston heat can check out Lady M’s line of candy and gummy bears, also available online.

Romaniszyn says Westchase’s West on West project, which is home to several Asian restaurants, is particularly fitting because Lady M has a large following in Asia and an Asian background (Romaniszyn herself is half Japanese and has combined Japanese flavors and sensibilities with French baking techniques to create the mille crepe cakes). Lady M’s neighbors include newly opened Korean dessert shop Somi Somi, Japanese T-Swirl Crepe, South Korean bakery Paris Baguette, Asian supermarket 99 Ranch Market, Korean barbecue restaurant Gen Korean BBQ and more.

The next Texas location could be Dallas, according to Romaniszyn, although he’s heard there’s growing interest in Austin as well (Romaniszyn said there’s a rumor about an entrepreneurial student heading to Houston to buy Lady M cakes and deliver them to Austin residents).

Things to know before your trip:

  • Cakes typically cost $9.50 to $12.50 per slice and $60 to $100 for a whole cake, while drinks range from $3 to $8.
  • The cakes are so delicate that one wrong move of the fork can cause the cake layers to slide apart. Romaniszyn recommends that guests use the “fork down” method, in which the fork is held vertically with the tines pointing downward to cut through the cake.

Lady M Confections is open Sunday through Thursday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Friday and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. 12270 Westheimer Road, Westchase.
