The Lakers are expected to agree to a two-way deal with center Christian Koloko to bolster their frontcourt following Christian Woods’ recent knee surgery, according to several people familiar with the situation who were not authorized to speak publicly.

Koloko, 24, was the No. 33 overall pick in the 2022 NBA Draft but missed all of last season due to issues related to blood clots. He has yet to be cleared by the NBA’s Fitness to Play panel, a group of doctors that will decide whether Koloko can return to play on the court.

The Lakers’ roster is at full strength at 15 players, and they are expected to release one of the three players on two-way contracts to make room for Koloko.

Koloko showed tremendous defensive potential as a rookie with the Toronto Raptors. A 7’1″ center with a 7’2″ wingspan, he averaged one blocked shot in 13.8 minutes per game. The Raptors released him last January to make room on the roster after completing a trade with Indiana.

Players who have not been cleared by the NBA’s medical committee are allowed to sign with teams, according to people familiar with the matter, but those signings must be reviewed by the NBA.
