Lamorne Morris asks Robert Downey Jr. to sign a poster of him after winning the 2024 Emmys

It was an unforgettable night for Lamorne Morris!

The 41-year-old actor took home the award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Miniseries or Anthology or Movie at the 2024 Emmy Awards.

He began, “I want to thank God for allowing me to be here. I also want to thank God for my wonderful mother for raising me. She’s been my biggest advocate since I, you know, fell out of her, her butt, whatever, I know where babies come from.”

He also thanked his four-year-old daughter Lily, teasing her: “I told you I would do it, you always doubted me.”

“All the people at FX, my wonderful cast, my management team, God, I forget so many people… My fellow nominees, Robert Downey Jr., I have a poster of you at my house, please sign it, seriously,” he continued.

“And I love you, all my friends and family. If you have my number, that means I love you,” he added. “Who am I forgetting? Let’s see, John Landgraf, Noah Hawley. Noah Hawley – you’ve put together an amazing cast and thank you for trusting and believing in me and everyone at FX and Hulu. I’ll do something else on my podcast and thank the other people I forgot to thank.”

For Fargo, Morris and his co-stars Juno Temple and Jon Hamm were all nominated. In a statement, Morris took the opportunity to joke about his career and challenge Downey Jr.

“Thank you to the Television Academy for finally recognizing my hard work on New Girl! Although I believe it is a no-brainer, I see that I am nominated alongside Robert Downey Jr., who gave me my role in Tropical Thunder,” he said. “My fellow nominees and I will not let this pass.”

“This is a huge honor and I couldn’t be more excited!” he continued. “It is truly a blessing to be able to work with such a talented cast and crew! Thank you Noah for the opportunity and trust in me to bring Witt Farr to life! Continue Fargo!”

Fargo, a thriller anthology with five seasons, was also nominated for the most outstanding miniseries.

Other nominees in Morris’ category included Jonathan Bailey, Robert Downey Jr., Tom Goodman-Hill, Lewis Pullman and Treat Williams.

Bailey, 36, nominated for Dear fellow travelers, released a heartfelt statement following the announcement, thanking fans as well as paying tribute to his character.

“Playing Tim Laughlin was the experience of a lifetime and I will always carry him with me. To have that experience honored in this way and to be able to experience it alongside Matt, my ultimate co-pilot, is truly immeasurable.”

“I am aware that this kind of recognition is rare. I grew up enjoying the minimal range of queer TV and film shows available, while simultaneously fighting against problematic media and social criticism of queer life,” says the Bridgerton The star continued: “I have loved so many award-winning dramatic portrayals of gay characters, but for Matt and I to be nominated together as gay actors feels like a kind of step forward that would have made growing up in the world easier. For that, I am grateful and incredibly proud. Thank you to the TV Academy for this opportunity.”

Bailey added, “I share this with Ron, Matt, Noah, Jelani, Allison, the entire Fellow Travelers family. And of course, Tim and all the other angels who fought before us.”

Matt Bomer was also nominated for his leading role in the political thriller based on the 2007 book of the same name. Bomber plays political operative Hawkins Fuller alongside his counterpart Tim Laguhlin (played by Bailey).

Nominated for his role in The sympathizer, Downey Jr., 59, who received the show’s only nomination this year, praised his colleagues in his statement at the time.

“I share this nomination with the incomparable director Park, Hoa Xuande, Sandra Oh and my remarkably talented Vietnamese colleagues,” he said. “It was a privilege to take part in this extraordinary, cross-cultural project. I thank the Television Academy for recognizing my five small roles in The sympathizer‘s bigger picture.”

The sympathizer follows a North Vietnamese spy captain, played by Hoa Xuande, who goes to the United States and meets the characters played by Sandra Oh and Downey Jr.

Goodman-Hill, 56, nominated for her role as antagonist Darrien in baby reindeer, was one of the hit Netflix series’ eleven nominations for the 2024 Emmy Awards. He played the screenwriter who sexually abused Donny, the character of lead actor and creator Richard Gadd.

“It’s all 100 percent emotionally true, if that makes sense. It’s all borrowed from incidents that have happened to me and real people I’ve met,” said Gadd diversity in April. “But of course you can’t tell the exact truth, for legal and artistic reasons. I mean, there are certain protections, you can’t just copy someone else’s life and name and show it on TV.”

Pullman, 31, was nominated for Chemistry lessons, one of four nominations for the show – one of them for outstanding miniseries. In addition to Pullman, Brie Larson was nominated for outstanding actress and Aja Naomi King for outstanding supporting actress.

In an October interview with PEOPLE, Bonnie Garmus, the author of the book that was later adapted for the series, praised the “really good” performances of Larson and Pullman, the latter playing Elizabeth’s fellow chemist and lover Calvin Evans.

She said she initially had doubts about whether Pullman’s physique would suit the character Calvin, who is also an avid rower, but she quickly realized that he “plays the role so well.”

In Feud: Capote against the Swans, Williams became famous for his role as William S. Paley. The series followed the life of the author Truman Capote and his high society girlfriends, whom he called his “swans” and whose secrets he revealed in a chapter of one of his books.

Williams died in a motorcycle accident in June 2023 at the age of 71, and the late actor was honored with a tribute on the show at the end of a Valentine’s Day episode.

“He was excited every day about these incredible scenes,” co-star Naomi Watts told PEOPLE at the time. “He said, ‘I can’t believe I have such good material.’ And I think we all felt that way, even in some of those scenes where he was acting horribly – the character, not Treat!”

His colleagues were also nominated: Tom Hollander as outstanding actor, Watts as outstanding actress and Diane Lane as outstanding supporting actress.
