Latest statements from Jet2 and Tui on the power outage: Passengers must “expect longer waiting times”

Jet2 and Tui have assured passengers that flights will go ahead unless they are told otherwise following Friday’s global IT outage. Jet2 said it “expects” flights to return to normal today, Saturday 20 July, while Tui urged customers to travel to the airport “as normal” if they are not contacted by their airline.

However, passengers have been warned that they will face longer wait times following disruption caused by yesterday’s power outage, which comes ahead of one of the busiest travel weekends of the year as thousands of families fly out for the school holidays.

The outage resulted in online check-in being down and some departure control points at airports being out of service, leading to a spate of flight delays and cancellations. Airports across the world, not just in the UK, were affected.

According to aviation data analyst Cirium, 6,855 flights were cancelled worldwide yesterday – that’s 6.2 percent of all scheduled flights. Meanwhile, 207 flights from UK airports were cancelled yesterday (6.7 percent of all scheduled departures from the UK), and a further 201 flights were cancelled.

As of 10:00 today, 1,639 flights have been cancelled worldwide (1.58 percent of all scheduled flights) – the number may change throughout the day. In the UK, 23 departures have been cancelled so far, and a further 25 arrivals.

In a statement on its website, Jet2 said: “Following the large-scale IT outage that affected airport systems on 19 July, we expect our flight schedule to return to normal from 20 July.”

“Please continue to check the Jet2.com website for information about your flight. As a reminder, our check-in closes 40 minutes before your flight’s scheduled departure time. Our Red Team is always available to assist you if you need it.”

Tui has told passengers travelling this weekend to come to the airport “as normal” but to expect “longer wait times”. In a statement on its website, the airline said: “Due to a global IT outage affecting Windows computers and servers on Friday 19 July, airlines including TUI Airways were impacted.”

“If you are travelling with TUI on the weekend of 20/07 or 21/07, we ask for your patience and understanding. Customers should travel to the airport as usual unless they are contacted directly by TUI or your non-TUI airline. However, please plan ahead and expect longer waiting times.

“We are also closed the day before check-in while this issue persists. If you are based at the resort and require assistance with your incoming TUI flight, please call: +44 203 451 2688. Customers travelling on a non-TUI airline should find further information regarding the status of your flight on their airline’s website.”
