LAX receives last cars for People Mover train

The final 4 Automated People Mover (APM) train cars have arrived at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), bringing the total on site to 44. The first cars arrived in the summer of 2022 and the remaining cars have been on their journey across the country since then from the manufacturer in Pittsburgh, PA. The new cars will be tested on the APM’s elevated roadway along with the rest of the fleet as the LAX Integrated Express Solutions (LINXS) design-build team continues to work toward the project’s December 8, 2025 completion date.

“The delivery of the final rail cars for the APM is an important milestone for this project and the transformation of our airport,” said John Ackerman, CEO of Los Angeles World Airports. “The APM will enhance the travel experience at LAX and set a new standard for sustainable transportation. As we move forward with this project, we remain committed to delivering a state-of-the-art solution that reflects our commitment to our passengers, community and the environment.”

LAX will be the first U.S. airport to deploy the INNOVIA 300 APM cars, which feature a number of sustainable features such as fully recyclable state-of-the-art aluminum housings, a regenerative braking system, and a design to eliminate hazardous materials and toxic emissions. The APM project is committed to environmental awareness. The train system has already received an Envision Gold Award for Sustainable Infrastructure from the Institute for Sustainable Infrastructure (ISI). In addition, APM’s maintenance and storage facility is designed to meet the US Green Building Council’s LEED Gold standard. Nearly half of the facility’s electricity is generated by a photovoltaic system.

Last week, following approval by the Board of Airport Commissioners on July 18, the Los Angeles City Council approved an agreement that sets a construction completion date of December 8, 2025, and provides LINXS with an additional $550 million, primarily to cover work already completed and a longer-than-expected construction period.

“The arrival of all APM vehicles in Los Angeles marks the beginning of the next phase of this massive project,” said Shawn West, board member of LINXS Constructors. “Our focus now shifts from building the physical structures of the APM to a comprehensive testing process with each individual vehicle.”

The APM train is expected to begin 24/7 service for LAX guests and employees in January 2026, with trains arriving at stations every 2 minutes during peak hours (9 a.m. to 11 p.m.).
