Lidl branch becomes £1 million more expensive – supermarket giant plans to open a larger location in North Wales city

A Lidl supermarket is in the running for £1m as it seeks a buyer ahead of a move. The German discounter plans to open a new site on Connah’s Quay High Street, moving from its current location at Deeside Retail Park.

The store is to be housed in the former Co-op market and planning permission was granted in 2022. Demolition work on the new location began this year.

An opening date for the new store has not yet been announced, but the current store is for sale with Legat Owen, priced at £1 million or available to rent for £96,000 per year. Where Tesco, Asda, Aldi and Lidl are planning new supermarkets in North Wales

Legat Owen said: “The property is located in Queensferry (approximately 7 miles west of Chester) and is situated on the B5219 with traffic volumes of approximately 18,000 vehicles per day. The property is part of the larger Deeside Retail Parc, whose anchor stores are The Range, B&M and Pets At Home. Lidl has acquired a relocation site approximately 1 mile to the north-west and is expected to hand over.”

The store is about 12,000 square meters in size.

This is all part of a plan by Lidl to expand the brand and improve its store offering in the region. The German company currently has 960 stores in the UK, but wants to increase that number to 1,100 by the end of 2025.

When the most recent list of target cities was published, six locations in North Wales were listed. These are:

  • Abergele

  • Caernarfon

  • Chester (including Broughton)

  • Flint

  • Llandudno

  • Rhyl
