Automakers have just made a historic shift in their decarbonization strategy, and it’s not just about electric cars. Moreover, the focus will not even be on hydrogen, which was one of the most promising energy sources. One group of automotive experts is already talking about the “new diesel“, with an unprecedented efficiency that surpasses previous engines. The curious thing is that it is liquid and gaseous at the same time and is used in ships, cars and even heavy-duty vehicles, which shows its enormous potential.

Over the years Liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) was seen as a more suitable fuel than diesel. This change is due to the fact that LPG is environmentally friendly, economical and can be easily integrated into existing engine systems. While diesel is on the decline due to pollution and government regulations, LPG is becoming the new environmentally friendly fuel on the market.

LPG stands for Liquefied Petroleum Gas, a flammable gas that occurs in gaseous form and is obtained from petroleum or natural gas. It mainly contains propane and/or butane, either alone or in mixtures or blends with other gases. LPG is obtained in gaseous form at normal temperature, but is marketed and transported in liquid form under pressure.

It is important to understand that LPG has several advantages over other fuelsand one of them is that LPG is cleaner to burn. They claim that natural gas emits much less carbon dioxide than oil and coal and is therefore better for the environment. Habu and Henein have independently done extensive work on the use of LPG in engines, particularly those designed for dual-fuel operation.

Research shows that the use of LPG in conjunction with diesel can improve thermal efficiency while improving emissions systems. For example, at various sweet spots, it was found that the thermal efficiency of LPG was improved by no more than 1.29% and Fuel consumption decreased by about 9.68% compared to the value achieved by an engine running on pure diesel.

However, when LPG is used, emissions of NOx, HC, CO and CO2 are significantly lower and the highest reduction rates are achieved with a 50 percent LPG blend. Changes made when integrating LPG include the installation of an engine management module to control the timing and amount of LPG injection, as is the case with the ECU.

Such a configuration increases the intensity of the fuel-air mixture and thus the emission of gases, which leads to improved combustion and thus higher performance levels. The further development of LPG technology was prompted by the search for a better and more efficient energy source.

These are models that can switch between LPG and diesel – new designs of dual-fuel engines for optimal fuel management. Such improvements have made LPG more attractive to car manufacturers seeking to meet strict environmental legislation and consumer demands.

The international market for LPG vehicles is developing at a forecast compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 6%. Forecasts assume that 30% of jobs will be filled between 2022 and 2029This growth is due to urbanization, modernization and increasing demand for renewable energy systems.

Car manufacturers are also turning to LPG technology to capitalize on these trends and government-supported clean energy policies. More and more brands have shown themselves attractive to LPG innovation. These companies are developing new engine designs and fuel systems that are more efficient in terms of LPG use.

The use of LGP (Liquefied petroleum gas) in the mobility industry will be a turning point that will occur in parallel with the alternative fuels revolution. What is clear is that not everything will be hydrogen and that there are other options that will minimize emissions in all types of vehicles. However, one question remains: who will want to drive this development? Few brands are doing so, let alone expecting it from major brands like Tesla or Volkswagen, at least on a large scale.
