Liza Colón-Zayas of “The Bear” is the first Latina to win in the Emmy category

The bearLiza Colón-Zayas won the award for Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series at the 2024 Emmys, becoming the first Latin American actress to win in the category.

“I thank my husband, David Zayas. He told me to write a speech, but I didn’t because I didn’t think it was possible,” said Colón-Zayas as she accepted the Emmy presented to her by It’s always sunny in Philadelphia starring Kaitlin Olson and Rob McElhenney. “How, how did I ever think it would be possible to be in the presence of Meryl Streep and Carol Burnett and Janelle (James) and Sheryl Lee Ralph and Hannah (Einbinder). I love you all with all my heart and all the women – my mom, thank you.”

Colón-Zayas, known for her role as Tina in The bearalso thanked the cast of the FX comedy, saying, “Thank you for giving me new life with this show,” before adding, “And to all the Latinas watching me, keep believing and go vote. Vote for your rights.”

This is Colón-Zayas’ first Emmy nomination and first win. At the Emmy Performer Nominee Celebration on Friday, The bear Star spoke with The Hollywood Reporter about the prospect of making history at the 2024 Emmys. “It’s epic,” she began. “The women who are in the same category as me, I love and admire so much that no matter what, I’m going to win and be seen as their equal. And then when it happens, it’s epic for women and people who look like me. I’ve accomplished something.”

The bear The show kicked off its likely rampage through the Emmys, with three wins in the show’s first hour. Ebon Moss-Bachrach won Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy and Jeremy Allen White won Best Actor in a Comedy, both two years in a row.

The 76th Emmy Awards will be hosted by father and son Eugene and Dan Levy and will be broadcast live from the Peacock Theatre in Los Angeles from 5:00-8:00 p.m. PT/8:00-11:00 p.m. ET. See all the red carpet arrivals.
