Local and national gas prices continue to fall

Although summer is coming to an end, drivers in the region can still look forward to some relief at the gas pumps.

According to a survey of 201 Modesto gas stations by GasBuddy, average gasoline prices in Modesto have fallen 10.1 cents per gallon over the past week, averaging $4.23 per gallon as of Aug. 12. Prices in Modesto are 27.2 cents per gallon lower than a month ago and 66.5 cents per gallon lower than a year ago. The statewide average price for diesel has fallen 3.4 cents over the past week, at $3.72 per gallon, the lowest since January 2022, over 900 days ago.

According to GasBuddy’s price reports, the cheapest gas station in Modesto was $3.56/gallon, the most expensive was $4.99, for a difference of $1.43/gallon. The lowest price in the state was $3.51/gallon on August 12, the highest was $6.79, for a difference of $3.28/gallon.

The national average price of gasoline fell 3.2 cents per gallon last week, averaging $3.41 per gallon. The national average is down 11.6 cents per gallon from a month ago, and is 42.5 cents per gallon lower than a year ago, according to data from GasBuddy, compiled from more than 11 million weekly price reports from over 150,000 gas stations across the country.

Current gasoline prices in neighboring areas are: Stockton – $4.28/gallon, down 7.3 cents from last week’s $4.35; Oakland – $4.59, down 2.9 cents from $4.62; and San Jose – $4.52, down 2.6 cents from $4.55/gallon.

“As the summer season slowly winds down, we continue to see gasoline prices falling in most parts of the country as demand remains subdued,” said Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy. “As long as we can avoid a major hurricane threatening refineries in the Gulf region, I believe the price decline could continue this week, with the national average potentially falling to its lowest level of the summer. While some states, notably the Great Lakes and Florida, could also see gasoline prices rise due to routine price fluctuations, overall prices remain lower in all states than they were a year ago.”

Updated 288 times a day and based on a highly diverse list of sources covering nearly 150,000 gas stations nationwide, GasBuddy’s survey is the most comprehensive and up-to-date in the country.
