Local restaurant in Henderson offers new help to those in need

HENDERSON, Ky. (WFIE) – In Henderson, a local restaurant is doing its part to help others in need.

Customers who come to ChefWhat are likely looking for good service and even better food.

And that’s exactly what owners Josh and Amy Bennett are known to serve.

“ChefWhat started as a hobby. I would grill on the weekends and post pictures on Facebook, and my friends would say, ‘Oh, I want that,'” Josh said. “And then I would sell grills out of my garage on Sundays.”

ChefWhat has something else that sets it apart from the rest.

They have a “Pay It Forward” board, which is essentially a menu with meals already paid for, so anyone who needs it can grab a ticket and get their meal for free.

“After opening this restaurant, I didn’t realize how many people are homeless and living paycheck to paycheck,” Josh said. “I had no idea how bad it was in our community. We knew we had to do something.”

Josh says that after starting about a month ago, he has already seen the results it has brought.

“Every day at least someone uses this board,” he said. “You can see in their faces how grateful they are, they have tears in their eyes. I mean, everyone deserves to have a hot meal every day.”

The community’s response to keep the table full was nothing less than a kiss from the chef.

“Even if you give $10 for a plate or something else, you’re still helping someone who’s struggling,” Josh said.

Everyone seems to agree with that.

Even people from out of town, like Mack Peebles, who just stops by on his way home to Nashville.

“We all know it’s tough out here and people need food and sometimes just a break,” Peebles said. “If they all did what this place is doing, we’d probably be better off.”

Josh says that’s exactly what he’s trying to do: help people get better.

“We all fall on hard times. We all need help, there are no judgements,” he said. “This is not going away anytime soon.”

If you would like to give something back yourself or just stop by, ChefWhat’s opening hours are as follows:

  • Tuesday to Friday 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 3 p.m. to 4 p.m.
  • Saturdays 10am – 2pm

They are closed on the first Saturday of the month.
