Local woman tells how her house caught fire at night

Houston County, Georgia (WGXA) – Elisa Farage described the scene as something like a war zone. “It almost sounded like a war zone,” Farage said as she recounted the night her home went up in flames.

This week, Farage begins the difficult task of rebuilding her home and her life after the fire left her with nothing. “There’s nothing left,” she said.

On Friday, Farage decided to take her golf cart for a spin and then talk to a friend on the phone. While she was talking on her back patio, she noticed an orange glow. At first she thought it was just a security light, but she quickly realized it was something much more serious.

“When I went into the garage, I saw that there was a fire and the whole side of the garage was already on fire. It was very hot,” Farage recalled.

She quickly grabbed her fire extinguisher in the hope of controlling the fire, but it had already spread uncontrollably. Farage explained that she had flammable items in her garage that contributed to the rapid spread of the fire and caused extensive damage to her property.

“I also had two propane tanks that I had recently filled for my grill. They exploded and my car blew up as well,” she added.

According to the fire service, firefighters had to work into the night to finally bring the fire under control. Despite the devastating loss, Farage expressed her gratitude to the firefighters who fought the blaze.

“The fire department – those guys were great,” she said.

To support Farage and others in need, Houston County’s Southern Santa is hosting a “Stuff the Truck” event tonight from 5-7 p.m. at Centerpoint Church. Community members are encouraged to stop by and donate items to help those affected.
