Locals fight against development plan for 140 apartments

WPTV listens to the concerns of residents in the quiet, agricultural community of St. Lucie Gardens about a development project they say will destroy the character of their neighborhood.

The planned Walton Ranch project The developers want to rezone 40 acres, which currently houses an equestrian facility, and build more than 140 rental apartments.which, in the opinion of many residents, does not fit well with their equestrian district.

“We just want to live a quiet life,” said St. Lucie Gardens resident Elizabeth Nelson. “We want to be able to go outside with a cup of coffee and just look around and see nature, be surrounded by our family and our animals and just look around at the greenery.”

Locals raise safety concerns about Walton Ranch project proposal

The neighborhood met before county leaders this morning to voice their concerns about the proposal.

Locals make their voices heard as developers propose 140 apartments in a quiet equestrian district

Although the St. Lucie County Planning and Zoning Board has recommended denying the proposed development, the decision will still be submitted to the County Commission.

WPTV reporter Briana Nespral spoke with Commissioner Jamie Fowler at the meeting this morning. She said she had to wait for the developers to give her final thoughts on the project.

“I really have to weigh up what the developer is willing to do to offset or mitigate their development impacts on the area,” Fowler said.
