Long-established Asian restaurant in Portland, Maine, plans to move

If you’ve ever seen a movie from the Back to the Future film series, you’ll remember how surprised Marty McFly is when he visits both the past and the future. The small town of Hill Valley looks similar to the one he knows, but there have been drastic changes along the way.

If you were to travel back in time twenty years to Portland, Maine, you would also see drastic changes. Many of the long-standing standard bars and restaurants that formed the cornerstone of Old Port are no longer there. And another of those remaining standards is about to say goodbye.

According to Portland Food Map, Japanese restaurant Sapporo plans to relocate to Falmouth later this year. Sapporo has been in Portland for nearly four decades and has been a staple on Commercial Street for as long as anyone can remember.

Sapporo’s announcement didn’t give any specific reasons for the restaurant’s move. But if you’re willing to pick up a few breadcrumbs, it’s possible that Sapporo is moving because of the changing landscape in Portland’s Old Port. In particular, parking.

Parking along Commercial Street remains difficult as many of the commercial parking lots have adopted a pricing model with high fees, which disgusts many visitors and, due to Sapporo’s current location, they are vulnerable to parking shortages.

Sapporo hasn’t released many details about their new Falmouth location other than that there will be plenty of free parking. They plan to open the new Falmouth Sapporo sometime later this winter.
