Louisiana’s request for declaration of major disaster approved

BATON ROUGE, La. (WAFB) – President Biden has approved Governor Jeff Landry’s request for a Major disaster declaration for the state of Louisiana after Hurricane Francine.

FEMA announced that federal disaster assistance is available to the State of Louisiana to support recovery efforts in areas affected by Hurricane Francine from September 9-12, 2024.

This affects the following municipalities

  • Rise
  • assumption
  • Lafourche
  • St. Charles
  • Saint James
  • John the Baptist
  • Holy Mary
  • Parishes of Terrebonne.

Depending on the extent of the damage, additional municipalities may be added.

“This federal assistance is critical to Louisiana’s recovery from Hurricane Francine. I am grateful for the hard work our federal delegation, local officials and our administration have done to get this across the finish line,” said Governor Jeff Landry.

Assistance may include grants for emergency housing and home repairs, low-interest loans to cover uninsured property damage, and other programs to help individuals and business owners recover from the effects of the disaster.

In Ascension, Assumption, Lafourche, St. Charles, St. James, St. John the Baptist, St. Mary, and Terrebonne parishes, federal funds are also available for debris removal and emergency operations, including direct federal assistance, to state, tribal, and eligible local governments, and to certain private nonprofit organizations on a cost-sharing basis.

Residents and business owners who have suffered losses in the designated areas can apply for assistance at DisasterAssistance.gov, by calling 800-621-FEMA (3362), or through the FEMA app.
