Lower gasoline prices make for a busy Labor Day weekend

Lower gasoline prices make for a busy Labor Day weekend

The following is a press release from AAA Idaho.

BOISE – As millions of Americans prepare for a busy Labor Day weekend on the roads and at airports, AAA is offering tips on how to successfully maneuver through the crowds.

AAA predicts a 9% increase in holiday travel this weekend compared to last year.

“Labor Day doesn’t see as much travel as the Fourth of July or Thanksgiving. But unlike those holidays, the Labor Day window is really tight, especially for those who need to be back for school in time,” says Matthew Conde, public affairs director for AAA Idaho. “There’s also a ‘FOMO’ factor – we know the weather is going to change over the next few weeks, and many of us are hesitant to say goodbye to the long, sunny days without one last hurrah.”

Gasoline prices will help Idaho drivers get on the road. The average price for a gallon of regular gasoline in the state is $3.60, up three cents from a month ago but 53 cents less than a year ago. The national average is $3.36 per gallon, up 15 cents from a month ago and 46 cents less than a year ago. The Gem State currently ranks 9th in the nation for most expensive fuel.

The cheapest gasoline in the country today is in Mississippi at $2.89 per gallon. Drivers pay the most in Hawaii, where the price is $4.66 per gallon.

Here’s a look back at Labor Day gas pump prices in Idaho and the U.S. over seven years:

Development of gas prices

The most popular travel destinations for Idaho residents on Labor Day are Anaheim, Las Vegas, Salt Lake, Orlando and Seattle.

“Cruises to Alaska are one of the most popular activities this year. Right now, the weather is perfect and you might be lucky to see the early fall leaves and some very active wildlife,” Conde said. “But whether you’re heading to theme parks, national parks, state parks or even a quick camping trip, you’re sure to find plenty of people thinking along the same lines.”

AAA recommends arriving at the airport at least two hours before departure. Download the airline’s app to stay informed of changes to your itinerary. Avoid checking baggage if possible. If not, pack important documents, medications and a change of clothes in your carry-on.

“If you plan to drive, you will experience the worst congestion on Thursday and Friday afternoons, but Monday may also be heavy,” Conde said. “Whatever day you travel, you should leave as early as possible, especially if your route takes you along two-lane highways.”

AAA will answer 307,000 roadside assistance requests over the holiday weekend. Make sure your vehicle’s fluid levels and tire pressure are topped off before you begin your trip. If your battery is three years old or older, you should have it checked at a repair shop or auto parts store.

Important information for emergency equipment

Here is a list of some things to take with you on your road trip:

  • Torches or reflectors
  • Basic tools
  • First aid kit
  • Flashlight with fresh batteries
  • Protein snacks and water
  • tape
  • A blanket and extra clothes

Memories of 100 Deadliest Days

As the 100 Deadliest Days, the period between Memorial Day and Labor Day when fatal crashes skyrocket, comes to a close, AAA reminds drivers to continue to use good judgment and caution. Please avoid distractions, drive when you are rested and alert, avoid speeding, and never drive after drinking. And of course, wear your seatbelt.
