Lubbock ISD creates mobile classroom “Innovation Station”

Lubbock ISD creates mobile classroom “Innovation Station”

LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – LISD students now have access to a new kind of classroom on wheels.

This new project will serve as a mobile learning environment that provides academic instruction and community engagement to Lubbock ISD students and families.

Anna Delano, Reliant’s Lubbock regional manager, said the district approached her with the idea last year.

“We are excited about the idea of supporting LISD. Education is very important to Reliant,” said Delano. “It is one of our pillars of giving. When we saw the opportunity, we immediately jumped at the opportunity.”

Dr. Lance Sobehrad, Lubbock ISD’s research and innovation coordinator, says he wants the Innovation Station to become a part of the community.

“We want parents and families of Lubbock ISD students to know that our goal in educating their children goes beyond the classes they come to every day,” Sobehrad said.

“We want to bring the Innovation Station to a public park, to community events and other opportunities where we can see you in the community and continue to inspire your students to learn.”

The Innovation Station has already helped the children learn, which Superintendent Kathy Rollo is very pleased about.

“It’s just a really special place where kids can continue to learn and grow,” Rollo said. “The interiors were outfitted by our own OL Slaton students, which is really cool. This is a hands-on learning experience for them as well.”

One of the students helping was Aharon Curry, a freshman at Monterey High School.

Curry said he first saw the project “when everything was being torn down. I helped out and some friends helped me, and it was just really good,” Aharon said. “It helped me make it ready for young children to learn.”

Rollo says the Innovation Station will provide students with numerous educational opportunities.

“But there are areas where kids can work with technology, there are areas where kids can read books, there are areas where kids can cut, glue and make things, and all kinds of projects that interest them,” Rollo said, “that they can do in our Innovation Station.”

Schools that offer extracurricular education have priority in using the Innovation Station.

However, all schools in the Lubbock ISD district can request and use the station.
