Lucy’s Retired Surfer’s Bar and Restaurant announces permanent closure

A restaurant in Biloxi suddenly closed its doors on Monday morning.

Lucy’s Retired Surfer’s Bar and Restaurant posted a message on Facebook this afternoon announcing its permanent closure.

Part of the announcement read: “It is with a heavy heart that we announce that today (August 19) we are closing our doors after five great years.”

No explanation was given as to why Lucy’s closed its doors, and calls from WXXV News 25 to the restaurant were not returned.

As the evening progressed, some local residents and former employees drove by the restaurant to remember the good times and try to understand the sudden change.

“It’s weird, it’s kind of odd,” said Bill Dixon, who lives on the Gulf Coast. “I’m surprised they’re closing, and why, I don’t know, but I find it a little odd.”

“It’s sad, it’s a really sad place,” said former Lucy’s bartender Karie Walter. “It’s a great place, and a lot of businesses couldn’t stay here. Look at the sunset, look at the view we have… it’s beautiful, and a lot of people who worked here were really great people. It was a great family, it was a great organization to work for.”

“I found out yesterday on Facebook from friends who work here that this would be their last day of work and I thought it was sad that they couldn’t even give people notice,” Walter added. “It’s a local business and local people need to… we need jobs, it’s tough times right now.”

However, Lucy’s said its restaurants in New Orleans and Aruba would remain open.
