Macy’s retail store in Rookwood Commons celebrates grand opening

Macy’s retail store in Rookwood Commons celebrates grand opening

Rookwood Commons & Pavilion has further enhanced its shopping experience.

The new small Macy’s store in the Norwood mall will celebrate its grand opening on Saturday, August 24, according to the retailer’s website. The grand opening event will feature giveaways and live music, and customers will have a chance to win $25, $10 or $5 Macy’s gift cards.

A store manager said the store has been open to customers for nearly a week after its unofficial opening on August 10.

As more malls and major department stores close across the country, Macy’s, a longtime retail giant once headquartered in Cincinnati, is taking a new approach, opening small stores that are about a fifth the size of its traditional stores.

In addition to Macy’s own brands, these new, open stores also sell popular private labels. The company promises its customers a new “convenient and unique shopping experience.”

“In October, we announced plans to accelerate the expansion of our Macy’s small stores and open up to 30 additional locations by 2025. We continue to explore new locations and will announce more details once we finalize our plans,” a Macy’s spokesperson said in an earlier statement.

Macy’s opened its first small store in the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area in 2020, and by fall 2023, there were 12 small Macy’s stores nationwide. And in addition to this store at Rookwood Commons, three other stores in California, Florida and the Cleveland area will also celebrate grand openings on the same day.

The new Macy’s store at Rookwood Commons is located at 2719 Edmondson Road, where Bed, Bath & Beyond used to be. The store’s hours are Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., according to the Macy’s website.

The expansion of this small-format concept comes at a time when Macy’s is in the process of closing nearly a third of its full-size department stores across the country.

The company announced in February that it would close 150 “unproductive” locations by 2026, with 50 ceasing operations by the end of that year. Instead, it will prioritize investing in the remaining 350 stores while the others move toward closure.
