Madison gets a Goodwill Outlet Store

Madison gets a Goodwill Outlet Store

Goodwill of South Central Wisconsin will open an outlet store in Madison in late August, the company announced.

The store is located at 5525 Tradesmen Drive and is scheduled to open on August 28. Goodwill is offering free reusable bags to the first 200 customers who stop by, and there will also be prizes to be won.

The space will house the retail store, as well as warehouse and e-commerce operations space. It will be the first location where Goodwill offers job training for people who have difficulty finding work, said Michele Harris, CEO of Goodwill of South Central Wisconsin. The training program focuses on people with disabilities and inmates, she said.

The outlet store is expected to hire 20 part-time and full-time employees and will be the first outlet store to open in the 14-county Goodwill of South Central Wisconsin region. Goodwill already operates 13 retail stores in the region, Harris said.

What’s special about the outlet store is that it “helps us extend the life of the clothing donated to Goodwill.”

Goodwill outlets offer their customers another way to shop thriftily, she said, because shoppers buy their treasures by the pound. According to the Goodwill website, home goods, clothing and textiles, and shoes and handbags under 25 pounds are priced at $2.19 per pound and over 25 pounds are priced at $1.29. DVDs, CDs, albums, video games and hardcover books are $1 each. VHS tapes and paperbacks are 50 cents each.

Proceeds from the outlet will go toward Goodwill’s jobs and housing programs, Harris said, supporting eight 74-unit apartment complexes owned by Goodwill in Dane County.

“We are very excited for opening day,” Harris said.
