MAGA turns against Laura Loomer

MAGA turns against Laura Loomer

Several prominent members of Donald Trump’s MAGA (Make America Great Again) movement are calling on the former president to cut ties with controversial activist Laura Loomer, who a Trump ally in Congress accused of making “appalling and extremely racist” remarks.

The anger arose after Loomer was photographed with Trump at two 9/11 memorial events on Wednesday after she posted a racially motivated diatribe against Vice President Kamala Harris on X (formerly Twitter).

Loomer’s relationship with Trump has long infuriated some of his closest allies, and in April 2023, open opposition erupted when The New York Times reported that the former president was considering hiring the Florida Republican.

Trump ultimately denied Loomer the job, but she was seen in his entourage on Wednesday during visits to New York and Pennsylvania to mark the 23rd anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks.

The move was particularly controversial because Loomer – a self-described “proud Islamophobe” who was banned from Twitter before being reinstated after being bought by Elon Musk – suggested last year that 9/11 was an “inside job.”

On September 8, Loomer posted an X-post about Harris after the Democratic presidential candidate shared a post about her Indian heritage. Loomer said, “If Kamala Harris wins, the White House will smell like curry and White House speeches will be delivered through a call center and the American people will only be able to provide feedback through a customer satisfaction survey at the end of the call that no one will understand.”

Three days later, Republican Marjorie Taylor Greene, one of Trump’s staunchest supporters in Congress, hit back with an X-post of her own, commenting: “This is appalling and extremely racist. It does not represent who we are as Republicans or MAGA. It does not represent President Trump.”

“This type of behavior should never be tolerated. Laura Loomer should remove this.”

Greene later said she “used to be friends with Loomer,” but the activist “turned on me and started attacking me” after she “didn’t support” her in the Florida House election and then “lied so much about me and others like Matt Gaetz, even though we are President Trump’s most loyal and passionate elected members of Congress.”

Willie J. Montague, a Trump supporter running for Florida’s 10th congressional district, joined Greene, writing, “It’s disgusting. She must be stopped.”

Akshat Bhatia, a Republican running for mayor of the city of Irvine, California, responded to Loomer’s first post, saying, “I am a conservative Trump supporter through and through and agree with most of your posts, but I find this to be an unnecessary racist post about thousands of conservative Indian Trump supporters. This is how you turn conservative Indian Trump supporters into liberal Democrats.”

Loomer was also criticized by Senator Lindsey Graham, a prominent Trump ally in Congress.

He told HuffPost on Thursday: “We have political differences, but this person’s past is just really toxic.”

“I mean, she actually called for Kellyanne Conway’s daughter to hang herself. I don’t know how that all happened, but no, I don’t think that’s helpful. I don’t think it’s helpful at all.”

Newsweek reached out to Laura Loomer and Donald Trump’s presidential campaign team outside of regular office hours on Friday to ask for comment via direct message or email.

In an X-post late Wednesday, Loomer wrote: “To the many reporters calling me and obsessively asking me to speak to them today, the answer is no.

“I’m very busy working on my stories and investigations and don’t have time to deal with your conspiracy theories. I don’t work for President Trump. In fact, I don’t work for anyone.”

Trump has praised Loomer in the past, describing her as “the great Laura Loomer” in a July speech in Nashville, Tennessee, and calling her a “woman of courage” at his Mar-a-Lago resort in March.

Some Trump supporters have defended Loomer on social media. In response to Greene’s criticism, a “hockey mom” whose bio reads “Trump2024” said: “Go away, Marge. Laura has been busting her ass for the past three years to embarrass everyone while our elected representatives do nothing but tweet, send letters and hold pointless hearings.”
