For me, summer is a time to reflect, recharge, and rest. In June, when everything is still fresh, I like to write a list of five things that went well and five that I want to change. I hope to build on the success of the previous year while making changes that will make the upcoming school year even better. As we (hopefully) enjoy our summer before facing the adventures of the upcoming school year, here are some tips to give your students, and you, the experience they deserve.

“One of the most important things I hear from students is that they feel safe in my classroom. This allows them to take risks and grow in ways they wouldn’t otherwise be able to.” – Drew Lewis

First, don’t underestimate the time you spend at the beginning of the year building relationships and establishing routines with your students. Providing a safe space for your students will have a positive impact on their ability to learn in your classroom. One of the most important things I hear from my students is that they feel safe in my classroom. This allows them to take risks and grow in ways they wouldn’t otherwise be able to.

Second, I believe you can have a great school year if you focus on what you do and why you do it. Do your job to the best of your ability, give your students your best every day, but don’t take anything personally. Focus on the end results, draw on the “praises” you’ve received from students and parents over the years when needed, and get creative by involving your community to overcome the obstacles that stand in your way of making a difference in students’ lives.

And finally, don’t forget to take care of yourself. One of the best ways I take care of myself is my morning walks with my dog, Wicket. This morning routine helps me reflect, meditate, and start each day off right. Whatever you find to persevere and get through the adventure of the school year ahead, hang in there and let’s make sure we can teach and inspire our students the best we can!
