A New Orleans man facing murder charges this week is accused of killing his ex-girlfriend’s new boyfriend after a custody exchange at the Walmart in Gentilly ended in a fight, according to documents police filed in Criminal District Court.

Jerrell Andrews, 24, was sentenced to prison Wednesday for second-degree murder, attempted second-degree murder, second-degree kidnapping, stalking, domestic violence and burglary after fatally wounding Evans Page, 27, and injuring the mother of his child on Aug. 8. Page died Tuesday of gunshot wounds to his forehead and arm after being on life support for 10 days, court records show.

Homicide detectives interviewed Andrews’ ex-girlfriend, with whom he has a 2-year-old son, shortly after the shooting, police wrote in court documents. She told police she and Page had just left the movie theater when Andrews contacted her and said he wanted her to pick up their son.

She went with Page to the Walmart in Gentilly to meet Andrews. When she got there, Andrews ripped off her shirt sleeve and scratched her arm, according to police. The woman walked with Page and her son, but Andrews forced her off the road nearby at the intersection of Poland Avenue and North Johnson Street, court records show.

When they left the road, Andrews approached their car on foot, police said. He then shot Page in front of his son and the child’s mother, police wrote in the documents. Andrews forced the woman to leave the scene with him and their child, eventually leaving them both at their mother’s house, police said.

The child’s mother told police that she and Andrews had been together for three years before ending their relationship seven months ago and that he had been stalking her ever since.

Andrews faces a Gwen’s Law hearing next week, where Magistrate Judge Jay Daniels will decide whether to hold him without bail.
