Man caught with gun at Detroit gas station while trying to sell stolen go-kart

(CBS-DETROIT) – A man who knowingly possessed a gun as a convicted felon was caught trying to sell a stolen go-kart at a Detroit gas station, officials said.

The man was identified as Donald Wayne Cummings in a criminal complaint filed on July 26.

On July 18, Detroit police discovered that a go-kart had been stolen from a Family Dollar store. The victim told police he saw Cummings listing the go-kart for sale on Facebook Marketplace.

The victim had arranged to meet Cummings at the Citgo gas station on Wyoming Avenue to buy back the go-kart for $2,000. Detroit police had coordinated with the victim and set up surveillance at the gas station.

A stolen white van driven by Cummings arrived at the gas station and Cummings allegedly attempted to persuade the victim to go with him to pick up the go-kart from Cummings’ residence.

After the victim refused to accompany him, Cummings left the gas station and then returned with the go-kart, the criminal complaint states.

As Cummings got out of the go-kart, police officers approached him and Cummings ran ahead of them toward the back of the gas station. As he approached a fence, police officers saw him throw a gun and holster on the ground before climbing over the fence.

A foot chase ensued and officers ordered Cummings to lie on the ground, which he eventually did, according to the criminal complaint.

An officer attempted to retrieve the weapon thrown by Cummings and found a loaded Glock 23, .40 caliber, and a holster.

During the investigation, authorities learned that Cummings had been sentenced to 24 months in prison for a weapons offense.

He is currently on probation.

According to the indictment, Cummings possessed firearms despite knowing that he was not allowed to do so as a convicted felon.
