BOSTON – Transit police are investigating after a man died Saturday when he tripped on the live tracks at the Park Street MBTA station in Boston.

It happened just before noon on the southbound platform of the Red Line. Police say the initial investigation shows the man appeared to be under the influence of alcohol when he stumbled onto the tracks and landed on the live power rail.

Following the incident, service on the Red Line was replaced by shuttle buses for several hours and Green Line trains bypassed Park Street.

T drivers are worried

T drivers expressed concern that such incidents occur too frequently.

“This is a very unfortunate event, nobody could have predicted it,” said driver Alexis Duddy. “It’s honestly one of those things that unfortunately feels like reality in Boston. It’s one of those things that doesn’t really surprise me,” said Duddy.

“I find it sad and have heard of a few other cases where this has happened,” says frequent T rider Rob.

Alexis was on the T-Bahn at the time of the accident and had to change trains. “It was really confusing trying to figure out where we were going,” says T-Bahn driver Alexis Duddy

In their opinion, existing safety measures such as announcements and yellow lines are not sufficient.

“The subway has always been considered dangerous,” says Duddy.

“Maybe some kind of barrier. I know that would cost a lot of money, but it could increase the risk of falls for people. I want them to do something about it,” says Rob.

Police are still investigating the cause of the incident and believe there was no third-party negligence.
