Man found shot dead in parking lot of gas station in west Birmingham

An investigation is ongoing after a man was shot dead in west Birmingham early Saturday morning.

At 2:40 a.m., officers responded to the Exxon gas station in the 1100 block of Third Avenue West after the city’s shot detection system (Shot Spotter) indicated multiple gunshots.

When they arrived at the gas station, they found an unconscious man in the parking lot.

The Birmingham Fire Department pronounced him dead at the scene. His identity has not yet been released, but he is believed to be Hispanic.

The Exxon was closed at the time of the shooting, but is across the street from the El Centenario nightclub, which was open.

Officer Truman Fitzgerald said there was little information about what happened. Detectives were searching the area for witnesses and clues.

The man’s death is the 107th murder in the city this year. Of these, eight were judged to be justified and therefore not considered criminal. Two of the murders occurred in previous years, but the victims died in 2024.

There were 134 murders in all of Jefferson County, including 107 in Birmingham.

No arrests were made.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Birmingham Homicide Unit at 205-254-1764 or Crime Stoppers at 205-254-7777.
