Man injured after police-involved chase and shooting in east Birmingham

A man was admitted to UAB Hospital Tuesday afternoon following a police-involved shooting in East Birmingham.

A heavy police presence, including officers from the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office and the Birmingham Police Department, gathered near Messer Airport Highway near an Interstate 20/59 exit ramp.

A sheriff’s office spokesman said the incidents followed an attempted traffic stop around 2:15 p.m.

Officers attempted to stop a Dodge Challenger for a traffic violation at 1st Avenue N and 56th Street North.

The sheriff’s office said the driver refused to stop, and a chase began. During the pursuit, deputies’ vehicles were struck.

The driver caused a total write-off with his car directly at exit 120 on I-20/59.

The sheriff’s office said the driver got out of the car and shots were fired. The driver, later identified as 26-year-old Demarcos Javonte Mcalpine of Center Point, was subsequently taken to the hospital.

The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) said Mcalpine pulled out a gun when he got out of the car.

The sheriff’s office said McAlpine’s injuries were not life-threatening.

Birmingham Fire and Emergency Services said they were called to another overturned SUV crash at the corner of 52nd Street and Georgia Road.

Authorities confirmed that the incidents are related.

The sheriff’s office said the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) will investigate the incident.

No further injuries were reported.
