Mansfield 2 – Shrewsbury 1 – Late defeat for Salop

Mansfield 2 – Shrewsbury 1 – Late defeat for Salop

Before the meeting at Field Mill, Town had not scored an away goal this season, but that changed when Leo Castledine put Paul Hurst’s side ahead in the second minute.

Deji Oshilaja only half-cleared Luca Hoole’s cross and it fell to the feet of the Chelsea loanee at the back post, who shot past Christy Pym and into the goal.

It was Castledine’s second goal in a Town shirt and he probably should have scored a third shortly afterwards when he headed wide from a Funso Ojo corner – it was a free header in the six-yard box.

The first 35 minutes of the game were as good as Town had played all season. They looked confident in possession, much of it in the hosts’ final third, but were unable to capitalise on that advantage to build a two-goal lead.

The hosts came into the game better as the first half progressed after set-piece attempts by Lee Gregory and Stephen McLaughlin went wide.

Shortly before half-time, Mansfield had the chance to equalise: Keanu Baccus beat Mal Benning, but his attempt was blocked on the line by a combination of Toto Nsiala and Morgan Feeney.

The home team wanted a penalty, but referee Lewis Smith said it was not possible.

But four minutes after the restart, the hosts equalized.

Toto Nsiala had a moment he won’t want to experience again any time soon. He brought down Lee Gregory in the Town penalty area as the striker tried to head the ball away from goal.

He left referee Smith no choice but to point to the penalty spot and Gregory scored.

Savin was forced into a save by Stephen Quinn as his effort went through a crowd, but he blocked the ball with his legs.

George Lloyd had a great chance to decide the game for Salop five minutes from time when he headed a cross from Tom Bloxham straight at Pym from close range.

And almost immediately they paid for it when substitute Aaron Lewis burst through to give Mansfield their first lead of the game and, despite seven minutes of added time, the game ended 2-1.
