Marc-André ter Stegen says he “feels sorry for Eric Garcia” after giving Barcelona a red card in the Champions League

Marc-André ter Stegen says he “feels sorry for Eric Garcia” after giving Barcelona a red card in the Champions League

Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen spoke after the match after Eric Garcia was sent off in the 2-1 loss to Monaco on Thursday.

A bad pass from ter Stegen got Eric into trouble and led to a foul by the 23-year-old, which earned him a red card after just 11 minutes.

The fact that he needed a man less so early in the game proved to be the deciding factor and ter Stegen said it was a misunderstanding between the two players.

“We didn’t get along well in that situation. I feel sorry for Eric, it hurts him. And we played 80 minutes with one player less,” he told Movistar.

“We didn’t understand each other. Something happened that shouldn’t happen to anyone. That’s what happens in football. The defeat hurts because with 10 players on the field we fought back and tried to get a point.”

Lamine Yamal equalised to give Barcelona hope again before Monaco took the lead in the second half with a shot that appeared to have gone in from ter Stegen.

The goalkeeper has not commented too much on the second goal, but is already looking ahead.

“We fought back. And the second goal came at an undeserved time. In the end, we are left with the unpleasant feeling of not having scored any points,” he added.

“In the Champions League you always have to win. That is the goal. We will try to win the next game at home.”

The defeat against Monaco is Barcelona’s first defeat of the season and a difficult evening for Hansi Flick’s team. On Sunday, the team returns to La Liga away at Villarreal.
