MARTA trains will not run on the Gold Line station for six weeks

MARTA trains will not run on the Gold Line station for six weeks

For the second time this year, MARTA plans to temporarily close a station on its busy North-South Line for upgrades that the agency says will save time and money in the long run.

Between October 7 and November 15, MARTA trains will not stop at the Brookhaven station on the Gold Line, preventing rail customers from accessing and leaving the station.

The closure will allow construction crews to replace the 40-year-old pavers on the Brookhaven station platform, which MARTA says are in such poor condition that they are almost a safety hazard.

Rail service on the rest of MARTA’s Gold Line will not be impacted because repairs at Brookhaven will be limited to the platform and will not require track work, allowing trains to pass through.

Local bus service at the Brookhaven stop (routes 8, 25, 47 and 110) will also operate as planned. Parking lots and tunnels will not be closed.

To get Brookhaven rail users back on track, so to speak, during repairs, MARTA plans to offer bus shuttle service between the Brookhaven and Lenox stations to the south and the Brookhaven and Chamblee stations to the north. (Still, MARTA officials advise rail riders who normally park at Brookhaven to consider free day parking at the nearest alternate stations: Lenox, Chamblee or Doraville.)

The scope of work at Brookhaven during the six-week closure includes: demolition of existing flooring and installation of new tiles, pressure washing of concrete, sealing and application of a graffiti-resistant coating, and installation of new tactile warning strips on platform edges, benches and trash cans.

Closing the station will shorten the repair timeline by two years, reduce estimated costs by $9 million, and increase safety for everyone at the transportation hub, MARTA said.

Earlier this year, MARTA also closed its airport station for six weeks and deployed a bus shuttle system in April and May to speed up construction for repairs and upgrades — a tactic that initially worried regulars but ultimately went smoothly by most reports.

MARTA said additional work is also planned at Brookhaven station, including renovating the concourse, installing new SMART restrooms that use technology to improve cleanliness and safety, repairing the roof and walls, and modernizing signage.

In total, the modernization work in Brookhaven is expected to cost $13 million by fiscal year 2027. It is part of MARTA’s approximately $1 billion station renovation program. The goal of this initiative is to improve the safety and aesthetics of all 38 MARTA stations over the next few years.

Work already completed at Brookhaven Station includes ADA improvements, resurfacing the parking lot and replacing the roof of a traction power substation.

“The pavers on the Brookhaven platform are in poor condition,” MARTA General Manager and CEO Collie Greenwood noted in a statement this week. “We have repaired them as best we can over the years, but it is time to replace them before they become a safety hazard for our customers and make it difficult to board and disembark the train.”
