Masdar 4GW solar power project gets green light

TThe Egyptian Cabinet has given the green light to several major renewable energy projects proposed by Masdar, a prominent Emirati company, and Empower, a subsidiary of Al Nowais Investment Group.

Masdar has been granted permission to begin studies for a massive solar power plant with a capacity of up to 4 GW. In addition, the Cabinet has approved the implementation of another Masdar project aimed at harnessing 1,200 MW of solar energy, complemented by storage batteries with a total capacity of 240 MWh.

National Strategy

In parallel, the Cabinet also approved the further development of several renewable energy initiatives through Empower. These projects focus on the integration of storage batteries, either in conjunction with solar energy systems or as standalone facilities. The combined efforts of these initiatives are expected to significantly increase Egypt’s electricity supply, help meet growing demand and ensure the availability of additional power until next summer.

The aim of these joint efforts is to meet Egypt’s growing demand for electricity, particularly for the coming summer, while being in line with the country’s National Climate Change Strategy 2050 and Egypt’s Vision 2030.

Egypt’s electricity demand was 88% fossil fuel in 2023. Emissions per capita are below the world average. Egypt’s largest source of clean electricity is hydropower (7%). Wind and solar energy are beginning to grow and will generate 5% of the country’s electricity in 2023, up from just 1% in 2015.
