A masked man who shot and killed a couple in their Deltona home last week was caught in Michigan and identified as the ex-boyfriend of one of the victims, the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office said Monday.

The defendant, Malik J. McKenzie, 29, of Atlanta, was tracked down by detectives using license plate readers and surveillance video. He was located Saturday in Southfield, Michigan, where he was arrested, officials said.

The sheriff’s office said McKenzie will be extradited to Volusia County to face two counts of attempted first-degree murder and one count of armed burglary.

On Monday, August 19, officers responded to a 3 a.m. shooting at a home on Houston Drive in Deltona. They found the injured couple outside, their injuries were not life-threatening, investigators said.

According to officials, a masked man was seen outside the house immediately before the shooting.

Officers identified a dark-colored Nissan Altima with a Georgia license plate registered to McKenzie, the suspected shooter. It was spotted at a gas station and a McDonald’s in Volusia County. Officers also obtained other evidence linking McKenzie to the shooting.

Sheriff’s deputies obtained an arrest warrant for McKenzie and he was found near Detroit.
