MASSENA – Thanks to grants, improvements are in the air at Massena International Airport.
U.S. Senate Majority Leader Charles E. Schumer and U.S. Senator Kirsten E. Gillibrand announced Wednesday that the airport would receive $234,918 in federal funding to restore the airfield’s signage and markings.
City Councilwoman Susan J. Bellor said they were pleased about the funding.
“We really appreciate that both Senator Schumer and Senator Gillibrand continue to work to support our airport in Massena. Safety is of the utmost importance and this grant will ensure that signage and markings meet FAA (Federal Aviation Administration) standards. This helps everyone in our community and only sends the message to our passengers that their safety is important to us,” she said.
In total, Schumer and Gillibrand said, nearly $5.3 million awarded through the FAA’s Airport Infrastructure Grant program will support nine airports in upstate New York with safety and infrastructure improvement projects. The projects include developing and implementing new airport safety plans and building and expanding terminals, taxiways and airport signage.
Ogdensburg International Airport received $2,565,051 to expand and remodel its terminal and Watertown International Airport received $243,630 to develop a safety management system manual and implementation plan.
Steven Lawrence, executive director of the Ogdensburg Bridge and Port Authority, thanked Schumer “for his tireless support and leadership” in securing funding for Ogdensburg International Airport.
“This funding is critical to the ongoing renovation and modernization of our terminal and ensures we can continue to provide state-of-the-art facilities to our community and visitors,” he said in a statement.
Schumer said the bipartisan infrastructure and jobs bill “will help breathe new life into our airports in the north country and upstate New York.”
“From our major cities to our rural communities, Upstate New York’s regional airports are gateways for commerce, our tourism industry and critical connection points for our residents. We must ensure they have the resources they need to provide travelers with a safe and comfortable experience. This more than $5 million federal investment in new terminals, runways, signage and other critical infrastructure improvements will help airports from Ogdensburg to Plattsburgh reach new heights,” he said in a statement.
“New York’s airports welcome millions of travelers each year, and it is critical that they have the modern infrastructure passengers need to safely take off and land,” Gillibrand said in a statement. “This more than $5 million in federal funding will bring much-needed safety and infrastructure improvements to airports across New York State. I am proud to have championed securing these funds through the bipartisan infrastructure bill and will continue to fight to urgently modernize and improve airports across New York State.”
Several more projects are in the works for Massena International Airport after being approved by the Massena City Council during its recent meeting.
Among other things, a grant from the state Department of Transportation will allow them to plan the renovation of about 8,000 square feet of the terminal building’s roof. The federal share is $57,570, the local share is $1,515, and the state share is $1,515.
A second grant from the Department of Transportation will enable them to reconstruct a 1,640-meter section of the existing Taxiway A lighting system, reconstruct seven Taxiway A airfield guidance signs, install two additional replacement wind cones, and install a new Precision Approach Path Indicator (PAPI) for Runway 5. PAPI is a lighting system on the side of an airport’s runway that provides visual guidance during descent.
The federal share for this work is $966,128, the local share is $25,424, and the state share is $25,425.
Another grant agreement covers airfield pavement markings with a federal share of $234,918, a state share of $6,182 and a local share of $6,182.
