Michigan football’s next challenge is today against Arkansas State of the Sun Belt Conference.

The No. 16 Wolverines entered Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor as three-touchdown favorites when the game began.

Michigan will need to put in a strong performance in a top-10 matchup after a week of criticism following a humiliating 31-12 loss to Texas.

Michigan’s injury report is relatively clean, although starting receiver Tyler Morris is questionable and freshman returner Jordan Marshall is out.

Score updates for Michigan vs. Arkansas State

After Michigan’s defense forced a three-and-out, Wolverines quarterback Davis Warren threw a rash and inaccurate pass down the right sideline that was easily intercepted by redshirt senior linebacker Charles Willekes. You might have noticed the last name: Willekes’ older brother Kenny was a standout defensive end at Michigan State. Charles was a star at Rockford High School in Michigan.

Mullings broke free of right tackle and scored a 30-yard touchdown, his first of the season. On the second and fourth attempts, Mullings fought through a missed tackle, just passed the line of scrimmage on a counter run and was then free.

Michigan converted three third downs during the drive, including a Davis Warren pass on third-and-6 for 13 yards to top pass catcher Colston Loveland to the Arkansas State 36-yard line. The throw was made behind the athletic tight end, who had plenty of space in front of him.

Red Wolves quarterback Jaylen Raynor converted several third down attempts, including a pass on 3rd and 15 after a scrum to the right sideline, but the Wolverines forced a decision on fourth and 1 at the 24-yard line. Arkansas State attempted a 41-yard field goal, but Clune Van Andel’s kick hit the right upright and was no good.

Van Andel is the Red Wolves’ kicker after former starter Dominic Zvada transferred to Michigan, where he has been the most reliable offensive player over the past two weeks. Zvada, a junior, has a perfect 5-of-5 field goal percentage, including three over 50 yards, and he has made 3-of-3 extra points.

Michigan honored the late James Earl Jones with a video played in the Big House before kickoff. Jones, the famous voice of “Star Wars” villain Darth Vader and one of the greatest actors of his generation, grew up in Michigan. He died Monday at the age of 93.

The Michigan Football Association today honors former high school athletic advisor Greg Harden with a “G” in a heart decal on the back of his helmet.

Harden died this week following surgery. He was 75 years old.

Dubbed Michigan’s “secret weapon” by CBS’ “60 Minutes” in 2014, Harden was credited with Tom Brady’s rise among many other athletes and personnel officials. Harden was a school employee for 34 years from 1986 to 2019, then took on an advisory role in the athletic department. He was praised for bringing mental toughness to the 2023 football team as scandals and investigations arose en route to the national championship.

“There is no one better than Greg Harden, and we as a Michigan family are devastated by this news,” UM athletic director Warde Manuel said in a statement Friday.

“You have inspired me with your ability to love everyone and everything unconditionally,” former UM quarterback JJ McCarthy wrote in a lengthy social media post.
