Kyle Kawakami, chef and owner of the Maui Fresh Streatery food truck, is part of a new destination campaign by the Hawai’i Visitors and Convention Bureau called “The People. The Place. The Hawaiian Islands.”

“Maui is still open. It’s still the beautiful destination it always was,” Kawakami said during the campaign. “Yes, we have beautiful beaches. Yes, we have great food. But if you dig a little deeper and go a little beneath the surface, it’s the culture and the people that make the islands what they are.”

“Embark on a culinary journey through Maui, from hidden eateries and fresh-ingredient experiences to gourmet restaurants and farmers markets in Upcountry, Central and South Maui,” the office’s campaign announcement reads. “Explore lively towns like Wailuku, Pāʻia and Makawao, all of which feature local shops, art galleries and historic sites. Beach lovers can find the perfect stretch of sand among the many sunny beaches in South and West Maui. Discover additional travel inspiration with newly launched Maui itineraries on GoHawaii.com/Maui.”

“As Maui continues its inspiring rebuilding process following last year’s devastating wildfires, the island continues to welcome visitors,” the agency said in a statement. “While some parts of Lahaina have not yet reopened, several restaurants, shops and activities in Lahaina have resumed operations.”

West Maui hosts the 14th Annual Hawai’i Food & Wine Festival October 25-27 and the 41st Annual Maui Jim Maui Invitational November 25-27. Across the island, travelers can also look forward to the Festivals of Aloha September 4-October 28, the Hawaiian Airlines Made in Maui County Festival November 1-2 and other events.

“Participating in community or cultural festivals, shopping at local businesses and farmers markets, and eating at locally owned restaurants are great ways to experience Maui’s rich culture and get involved in the community,” says Daniel Nāho’opi’i, interim president and CEO of the Hawai’i Tourism Authority. “We welcome visitors to come back and rediscover Maui and the rest of the Hawaiian Islands.”
