Meijer and King’s Kupboard cooperate in the fight against food shortages

HILLSDALE – King’s Kupboard, a facility of Trinity Lutheran Church, is partnering with Meijer to provide assistance to local families experiencing food insecurity through the retailer’s customer-focused hunger relief program, Simply Give.

“Being selected as a partner of Simply Give is a blessing. King’s Kupboard is committed to providing food to all those in urgent need of food as a way to demonstrate God’s love in our community,” said Rev. Kara Shaw, pastor of Trinity Lutheran Church, home of King’s Kupboard.

Each Meijer Simply Give campaign feeds hungry families by stocking the shelves of more than 270 food banks in Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Kentucky and Wisconsin. The program encourages customers to add a $10 Simply Give donation card to their shopping cart, which is then converted to a Meijer grocery-only gift card and donated to a local food bank in the store’s community.

King’s Kupboard will benefit from donation cards at the Meijer store in Hillsdale through September 28. In addition, Meijer will match all customer cards on September 14, effectively tripling the contributions made on both days. Meijer customers who shop online and pick up at Meijer or have the merchandise delivered to their homes can also add Simply Give donation cards to their orders.

“King’s Kupboard was born out of a desire to help those who had lost their jobs but had not been unemployed long enough to receive other types of assistance. The ongoing hardships have shown us all how important it is for community members to support one another,” said Rev. Shaw of King’s Kupboard. “We encourage our community to donate and help us feed their neighbors in need in Hillsdale County by adding a Meijer Simply Give food donation card to their cart the next time they shop.”

Since 2008, over $91 million in food distributions have been distributed throughout the Midwest to provide food to people in need.

“What’s unique about the Meijer Simply Give program is that every donation stays local and goes directly to neighborhood food pantries to feed families in need,” said Melissa Conway, director of community partnerships and giving at Meijer. “Food insecurity remains a national problem and at Meijer, we are grateful to our customers and team members who continue to support this program, now in its 16th year.”

King’s Kupboard is open Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 3:30pm to 5:20pm. There are no income, religious or other requirements to receive food. Each family receives two days’ worth of food based on the number of people in the family. First-time visitors should bring something with the name and address of each household member when registering. King’s Kupboard welcomes partnerships with all types of community groups, welcomes donations from the community and invites the community to reach out and share ways they would like to be part of King’s Kupboard.
