Mets player Edwin Diaz finishes thrilling save with six outs and beats Phillies

The Mets have been cautious with Edwin Diaz for most of the season after the closer missed all of last season following knee surgery.

Those days are over as the team now needs every win it can get.

And against the Phillies, the closer delivered a convincing performance in two games in a row.

After making the final four outs in Saturday’s win, Diaz was put to an even greater test in Sunday’s 2-1 victory as he had to make his first six-out save of the season.

Diaz threw a scoreless eighth inning against the Phillies’ top lineup, then worked a couple of walks in the ninth inning to help the Mets hold on.

The closer said he didn’t necessarily expect to win both innings when he came on to start the eighth inning, but after an 11-pitch inning in which he struck out Kyle Schwarber and Bryce Harper, Carlos Mendoza asked Diaz to win the ninth inning.

“I decided to put him in the eighth inning,” Mendoza said. “I wanted to put my best man against their best hitters and play it out.”

He then spoke to Diaz and told him: “It’s your game.”

Diaz walked Bryson Stott with one out and Stott stole second base.

When JT Realmuto retired for the second time, Stott ran to third base and Francisco Alvarez’s throw hit the bag and bounced.

Luckily for the Mets, it didn’t go far and Stott stayed on third base.

Alvarez’s throw could have easily bounced into left field, allowing Stott to score and tie the game.

Instead, Diaz got Kody Clemens to swing after Brandon Marsh issued a walk and stole second base, ending the game.

The Mets have Monday off and Mendoza said he would have to wait and see if Diaz would be available for Tuesday’s series opener against the Braves in Atlanta.

However, Diaz said he felt fine.

“I’ll be ready on Tuesday,” Diaz said. “We’ve been playing playoff games since the beginning of September and I feel really good.”

The only other time Diaz pitched two innings this season—also scoreless—he struggled, allowing nine earned runs and three home runs in his next eight appearances.

“Looking back, they protected him all year and stayed away from back-to-back (appearances) because of situations like that early on,” Mendoza said. “He’s coming off a bad injury and struggled early in the season. But he’s an elite closer, one of the best in the game.”

And that’s how he throws now.

“What we’re seeing from him lately is his form for 2022,” Mendoza said. “And here we are, we need everything from everyone and he’s giving it to us.”
