Benito Juárez International Airport, better known as Aeropuerto Internacional Ciudad de Mexico (AICM) or Mexico City International Airport, is the busiest international airport in the Central American country.

However, it is also considered the busiest two-runway airport in the world, with an average of 1,056 aircraft movements per day.

Last year alone, this huge air transport hub in Mexico welcomed more than 48.4 million passengers – almost two million more than the 2022 figures.

The airport of all Mexican airlines welcomes you in Mexico City, just a few minutes from many tourist areas.

Mexico City International Airport offers flights to and from most major cities in the world, including Amsterdam, Bogotá, Buenos Aires, São Paulo, Santiago, London and Los Angeles.

In addition, there are shorter international flights to most Central American capitals and scheduled domestic flights to almost all Mexican airports.

The airport has two terminals located at the southwest end of the airport grounds on opposite sides of the runways. Inside, there are several luxury lounges operated by companies such as American Express, HSBC and Lufthansa.

The heavy air traffic at this airport prompted Mexican authorities to declare the surrounding airspace “saturated” in 2014.

That same year, the government of then Mexican President Peña Nieto proposed the Texcoco Airport project – a planned airport to replace Benito Juárez International Airport.

The Texcoco Airport project, which was to become the Nuevo Aeropuerto Internacional de México (NAICM), was expected to cost a whopping $13.3 billion (£10.4 billion) – although work began in 2018, the plan was later scrapped.

The area on the outskirts of Mexico City is now to be converted into a national park.
