Miami Football will try to end Florida’s 33-game winning streak in its home opener

Florida hasn’t lost a home opener since Mississippi’s 24-19 victory at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium in 1989. The Gators have won 33 consecutive home openers since 1990. After a three-hour lightning stoppage, Florida’s first home game in 2014 against Idaho was canceled due to unsafe field conditions.

Florida and Miami have played each other eight times during the Gators’ winning streak at home. None of those games came in Week 1. Florida and Miami played their season openers from 1983 to 1985 and again in 1987. Florida beat Miami 28-3 in the 1983 season opener in Gainesville. That was Miami’s only loss in a national championship season.

Florida’s victories during its 33-game home season-opening winning streak have primarily come against FCS and Group of Five opponents. Florida defeated McNeese State 49-7 in its 2023 home opener. Florida earned an impressive 29-26 win over No. 7 Utah in its 2022 home opener.

Miami has a 22-12 record in road openers since 1990, during Florida’s 33-game home winning streak. Miami has a 1-1 record in its first road game of the season during that time in Florida. The Hurricanes won their 2022 road opener in Gainesville 41-16 and lost 26-3 in 2008.

Miami leads the all-time series with Florida, 29-27. Miami leads the series with Florida, 12-9, in Gainesville. The 2008 game was the last time Miami played in Florida. Florida has won two of the last three games against Miami. Miami won 21-16 at Hard Rock Stadium in 2013. Florida defeated Miami 24-20 in Orlando in the last meeting in 2019.

Miami won its first road game of 2023, 41-7. North Carolina defeated Miami 41-31 in the Hurricanes’ first road game against a Power Five opponent in 2023. Miami hasn’t played a true early-season road game since a 31-13 loss at Louisville in the first game of the 2014 season. That was Louisville’s first ACC game.
