Miami International Airport receives ACI accreditation for carbon reduction

Airports Council International (ACI) has awarded Miami International Airport (MIA) with the agency Airport Carbon Accreditation (ACA).

The accreditation recognizes the airport’s commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

To obtain accreditation, airports’ efforts to control and reduce their carbon emissions are assessed through a seven-stage certification: mapping, reduction, optimization, neutrality, transformation, transition and level 5.

Through its collaboration with Miami-Dade County authorities, MIA has achieved Level 1 accreditation, which requires it to comply with the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change’s Race to Zero program and the Climate Action Strategy, which requires MIA to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by 50% by 2030.

Mayor of Miami-Dade County, Daniella Levine Cava said, “This prestigious recognition from the leading airport industry experts at ACI World speaks volumes about MIA and Miami-Dade County’s status as global leaders in sustainability.

“Even more impressive is that MIA maintained its accreditation while remaining the fastest-growing gateway airport in the country by seat capacity since the pandemic.

“Congratulations to the MIA team for their world-class efforts to reduce carbon emissions by 50% by 2030 by reducing fuel and electricity consumption, and for being recognized on the world stage.”
