Michael Keaton may not be known by his famous nickname for much longer.

The 73-year-old actor recently announced that he wants to revert to his birth name, Michael John Douglas, after choosing not to use it in Hollywood for nearly 50 years. He noted that he cannot use his actual last name because Screen Actor Guild rules prohibit union members from using the same professional name, which would result in him using the same name as his fellow actor. “I looked through – I can’t remember if it was a phone book,” Keaton recalled in an interview with People published on Wednesday, September 4. “I must have thought, ‘I don’t know, let me think of something here.’ And I thought, ‘Oh, that sounds reasonable.'”

Keaton announced that he planned to be credited as Michael Keaton Douglas in his 2023 film. Knox leavesbut simply forgot to make the change.

“It completely got away from me. And I forgot to give them enough time to put it in and create it,” he explained, before teasing, “But that’s what will happen.”

According to the outlet, Keaton will be credited under his stage name in the upcoming film. Beetlejuice Beetlejuicewhich will be released on Friday, September 6. In the sequel to the popular 1988 film BeetlejuiceKeaton once again takes on the role of the titular scheming demon, who Winona Ryder‘s Lydia Deetz to save her daughter (Jenna Ortega) from the crazy world of the afterlife.

In a video interview with People At the release on Wednesday, Keaton admitted he was initially hesitant to take on the role of Beetlejuice, who has since become one of his most iconic characters.

“I said (director Tim Burton), ‘Give me the night. Give me the night to think.’ And I called the costume department and said, ‘Send me a rack of clothes from all different time periods,'” he said. “I remember walking around this empty house and saying, ‘I want to take a walk.’ I don’t know. It just started to develop and I just said, ‘This could be fun. I have no idea if this is something.'”

He continued: “(Tim) knew what he was doing. He had it very clear in his mind. He had the images of the sets and the world in his head. I just had to fit in.”

The 66-year-old Burton will again direct the sequel, which also stars Catherine O’Hara, Justin Theroux, Monica Bellucci, Willem Dafoe and Ortega, 21.

Keaton is not the first celebrity to use his birth name again. His former Birdman Co-Star Emma Stone revealed that she had started using her real first name, Emily, on set a few years ago. “For some reason I thought, ‘I can’t do this anymore. Just call me Emily,'” she told The Hollywood Reporter in April.

Stein also corrected Types of kindness director Yorgos Lanthimos about her birth name after a reporter referred to her as Emily during a press conference at the Cannes Film Festival in May. “My name is Emily, thank you,” the Oscar winner told the reporter, adding, “Very nice.”
