Michaela DePrince, groundbreaking ballerina in Beyonce’s “Lemonade,” dies at 29

Michaela Mabinty DePrince, a groundbreaking ballerina from Sierra Leone who appeared in Beyonce’s “Lemonade,” has died at the age of 29, her spokesperson said in an Instagram post.

No cause of death was announced.

“Her life was one of grace, determination and strength. Her unwavering commitment to her art, her humanitarian efforts and her courage to overcome unimaginable challenges will forever inspire us,” the post said. “She was a beacon of hope for many, showing that despite all obstacles, beauty and greatness can rise from even the darkest places.”

DePrince made history as the youngest principal dancer with the Dance Theatre of Harlem, the article says. She also danced with the Dutch National Ballet and the Boston Ballet.

She wrote her memoir, Taking Flight: From War Orphan to Star Ballerina, and a follow-up book, Ballet Dreams, in which she tells her story.

In her Instagram post, she was described as a dedicated humanitarian who served as an ambassador for War Child Holland and hosted their “Dare to Dream” gala, dedicated to promoting the wellbeing and mental health of children in war zones.

“Although her time with us was far too short, her genius and legacy will continue to shine in the hearts of all those touched by her story, for generations to come. Love and prayers go out to her adopted family, friends and those who loved her,” her spokesperson said.
