Michiana Eats: The Holden Green Tavern

Michiana Eats: The Holden Green Tavern

CASSOPOLIS, Michigan (WNDU) – There’s a place in Cassopolis full of history and delicious food.

The building at 151 South Broadway was originally a post office from 1897 to 1957. It underwent various changes over the years until it was purchased by a local dentist in the late 1990s and converted into a private club.

In 2018, Steve Schroeder purchased the building and named it The Holden Green Tavern.

“I just tried to restore it back to where I could open it up as a tavern for the community,” Schroeder said. “People come in and see people they haven’t seen in 30 years. So it’s a great place to come in and meet old friends you haven’t seen in a long time.”

But Schroeder has made sure to keep history in the building. You’ll find things like an old-fashioned phone booth, barber chairs that are over 100 years old, and old pictures on the wall showing what downtown Cassopolis looked like in the past.

The Holden Green Tavern is known for its pizza and sandwiches.

“I’m a pizza snob and we worked really hard to find the right dough recipe and the right sauce recipe,” Schroeder said. “We buy the best cheese; it’s a provolone-mozzarella blend, so it’s just perfect.”

The Holden Green Tavern is located at 151 S. Broadway Street in Cassopolis.
