Michigan Central Station celebrates 100,000 visitors

Due to popular demand, The Station will also be open from 10am to 5pm on September 1st and 2nd.

Guided tours will be available in the coming weeks

DETROIT, August 8, 2024 – Michigan Central has reached a new milestone, welcoming more than 100,000 visitors to the revitalized station since reopening in June. In response to this demand, Michigan Central is extending Summer at the Station through Labor Day weekend, offering visitors one final opportunity to experience and learn about the building’s transformation from ruin to rebirth through the OPEN event. Exhibits before the station enters the next phase of its reactivation.

Summer at The Station will continue to run Fridays from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. and Saturdays from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. through August 31, with extended hours over Labor Day weekend on Sunday, September 1 and Monday, September 2 from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. All Summer at The Station tours are self-guided, with no tickets or registration required. Michigan Central will announce ways the public can continue to visit The Station in the fall later this month, including guided tours and ticketed group tours. After a six-year restoration by Ford Motor Company, during which more than 3,100 craftsmen contributed a total of 1.7 million hours of work, Michigan Central Station officially reopened its doors in June for the first time in nearly four decades. big openingThe station has welcomed visitors from all over the world to explore its restored rooms and comprehensive cultural exhibitions.

The 10-day OPEN House celebration attracted more than 50,000 visitors from June 7-16. Since opening on June 21, Summer at The Station continues to exceed expectations, attracting an average of 3,000 visitors on Friday nights and 5,000 on Saturdays. The excitement surrounding this revitalization is a reminder of Detroit’s shared history as a city of opportunity and the importance of preserving this landmark for the community.

Pastor Robert D Lodge of People’s Missionary Baptist Church in the McDougall-Hunt community on Detroit’s east side was the station’s 100,000th visitor. He was joined by family members: his wife Latashia Lodge and four cousins, children ages 3 to 10.

“As the 100,000th person to walk into this monumental building, I realized that the future is bright and Detroit has a new beginning,” said Pastor Lodge. “We wanted to come and recreate the nostalgia of the station and see the improvements and revitalization of Detroit. This will be a monumental reminder that Detroit is back.”

As the centerpiece of Michigan Central’s 30-acre innovation and cultural center, The Station will support growth and opportunity in Detroit’s future. It will house larger tenants and established companies, attract and retain technology talent, and attract diverse businesses. Its first tenants, Detroit youth in Google’s Code Next program, have already moved into their offices on the fifth floor of the station. The program supports Detroit high school students pursuing careers in technology and will help build a pool of diverse talent for tech startups and established companies in Michigan.
